Y7 Collegians Eagles 104/10 defeated by Mana Red 150/6 at Ngatitoa

After 2 weekends of no cricket, it was obvious that the team was eager to get back on the field.  Josh and Josh (Scotty) started with some very tight bowling (Scotty ended up with 6 runs, 2 wickets off 4 overs and Josh 20 runs, 2 wickets off 5 overs).  The first half of the innings was painfully slow, which meant that Mana were only 55 after 15 overs.  However, like the Black Caps, the drinks break was not on the Eagles side. Sloppy fielding and a couple of drop catches let down what would have been a great bowling effort.

With the team eyeing a win, disaster hit on the pitch.  Batsmen were dropping at regular intervals after giving up their wickets easily.  Zach and Liam staged a small comeback in the middle order, while Adam and Cameron put on 20 runs for the last wicket.  Unfortunately it was a little too late.

Player of the day went to Zach.

Y7 Collegians Eagles 118/10 defeated by Wellington Indian Sports Panthers 189/10 at Wakefield

After frantically listening to the cancellations and discovering that, despite the wind and rain, cricket was still on, the Eagles arrived at the game with jackets and umbrellas.  After discussion between both teams it was initially decided that the game would be abandoned and a short 10 over game would be played instead.

The Eagles lost the toss and were sent into bat.  All the team padded up, and discussed tactics.  Batsmen were sent out with instructions to “smash it” as hard as they could for 2 overs, before retiring.  This plan worked to perfection with Max knocking the ball to the boundary.  Unfortunately for the team, the weather appeared to improve, and the game quickly progressed from 10 overs, to 15, to 20 to 25.  The Eagles were not impressed by this as they had planned their approach thinking they were only playing 10 overs.  Numerous cries of discontent and protest could be heard from the team.  The Indians bowling attack was fierce with wickets falling at regular intervals.  Best batsmen were Liam D with 28 runs, Max C with 22 runs and Felix A with 10.

With the weather once again turning for the worst, the Eagles set out to field.  They got an early breakthrough in the 4th over with some quick bowling from Josh W.  Fielding was good with numerous run outs from direct throws, an awesome stumping and a blinder of a catch by Zac S H.  However, the rest of the catching let the side down again.  On a good note – the least amount of extras were given away in this game – well done to the team.  Best bowlers were Cam M-A 2 wickets for 12 runs off 2 overs, Josh W 1 wicket for 27 runs off 4 overs and Zac S H 1 wicket for 34 off 4 overs.

Player of the day went to Max C.

Y7 Collegians Eagles 120/8 defeated Easts Cobras 100/9 at Wakefield

Sent in to bowl first, the Eagles got off to a great start considering the pitch was a dog.  Josh’s line and length was on fire this week.  Josh ripped through the opening batsmen ending up with 7 runs, 3 wickets off 4 overs (including a double wicket maiden).  The Eagles bowling and fielding was so good this week, that the Cobras slipped to 40 for 6 after 15 overs.  A late flurry by the Cobrass lifted their score to 100, but they were still bowled out with 5 and a half overs to go.  Best bowlers were Josh W – 7 runs, 3 wickets off 4 overs, Zac – 2 runs, 2 wickets off 2 overs (including a wicket maiden), Josh Scott – 8 runs, 1 wicket off 2 overs and Adam – 8 runs, 1 wicket off 1.3 overs.  Special mention to Liam who took 2 awesome catches, and Harry who did a remarkable throw from the outfield to directly hit the wickets, running out the batsman.

The Eagles were somewhat confident knowing that they had limited the Cobras to 100.  After starting well, they lost 2 quick wickets.  The middle order was called on to stabilise the innings.  While runs were hard to come by, Laurence and Cameron dug deep and kept the runs ticking over.  Unfortunately, once they retired the Eagles lost a few more quick wickets.  The tail end put up a good fight, with the Eagles losing their last wicket with 5 balls remaining.  Fortunately, they had done enough to rack up their first win of the season.  Best batsmen were Cameron – 15 runs, Max – 14 runs and Josh Scott – 12 runs.

Player of the day went to Josh Wight.

Y7 Collegians Eagles 110/10 defeated by Tawa 146/6 at Elsdon

With the sun and the dark clouds fighting for dominance, and the brisk southerly keeping everyone on their toes, the Eagles were sent in to bat.

Once again, the Eagles were given a lesson in catching as all but 2 of the Eagles were caught out.  Josh tried to steady the ship at the beginning of the innings, before being retired.  Unfortunately, wickets were falling quickly which saw Felix arrive at the crease sooner than expect.  Felix relished this chance to build a big score, smacking just about every ball to the boundary with ease.  Josh rejoined the batting and finished off his innings with a flurry of boundaries.  The Eagles failed to bat out their innings, loosing their last wicket in the 29th over.  Best batmen were Felix – 36, Josh – 29 (n.o.) and Laurence – 12.

Knowing that they had to bowl and field well, the Eagles got off to a great start taking the first 2 wickets for 10 runs.  Unfortunately, the Eagles catching was sub par with at least 4 catches being put down.    Tawa’s batsmen were keen on scoring runs with boundaries coming often.  Best bowlers were Josh W 21 runs, 2 wickets off 3 overs, Josh S 11 runs, 2 wickets off 3 overs and Alex 6 runs, no wickets off 2 overs.

Player of the day went to Felix.

Y7 Collegians Eagles 112/8 defeated by Johnsonville World Series 145/7 at Ian Galloway

With the first game of the Eagles 2011/2012 season, everyone (especially parents) was hoping for a calm, sunny morning to enjoy the cricket.  While the sun was out, unfortunately the wind whipped through Ian Galloway all morning.

The Eagles were sent into bat by J’ville.  J’ville’s opening bowler made an early break though taking his first wicket on the second ball.  Parents and players hoped this wasn’t a sign of things to come.  J’ville brought their ‘A’ fielding game – providing a catching lesson for the Eagles.  Wickets fell at regular intervals courtesy of J’ville’s amazing catching skills.  .  Runs were hard to come by due to the tight fielding of J’ville.  Boundaries were also few and far between.  The Eagles ended on 112/8.  Best batmen were Alex – 18 (n.o.), Liam 13 (n.o.) and Josh – 8 (n.o.)

Knowing that they had to bowl and field well, the Eagles got off to a great start with Josh taking the first wicket on the 4th ball of the innings.  J’ville brought in their big hitters and the next wicket didn’t fall until J’ville were 84.  After their great start J’ville had a mini collapse before righting their ship, ending on 145/7.  Best bowlers were Nathan 21 runs, 2 wickets off 3 overs, Harry, 21 runs, 2 wickets off 3 overs and Cameron 14 runs, 1 wicket off 3 overs.

Player of the day went to Nathan (on loan for the day from another team).
