ONSLOW AGRA PROVIDE STIFF OPPOSITION

The last time we met the Onslow Agra team we were well and truly beaten, (unfortunately) history repeated itself at Rongotai College on Saturday.
It started positively enough with the boys doing some good warm up drills and captain of the day, Sam, winning the toss and electing to bowl.  A reasonably good effort with the ball with Max, Louis and Ben each getting a wicket and Ryan who snared a couple. One of the highlights was a fantastic runout by Ari. The Onslow batsman had squirted a ball to square leg and taken off for a quick single. Ari ran in, picked up the ball in one hand and, even though he only had one stump to aim at, knocked the wickets over stranding the batsman a good two metres out of his crease. In our last game we conceded 35 wides and that was the same number as we gave up on Saturday. This was the most disappointing aspect of our bowling and fielding. Everything else was spot on. We bowled Onslow out in the 24th over for a total of 85. A good score but not beyond us.

However, in scenes reminiscent of the 1932-33 Ashes series, our two opening batsman were subjected to a barrage of bodyline deliveries that left them bruised and hurt. But they soldiered on and remained unbeaten at the end of their overs. It has to be said that the Onslow bowling was top notch with excellent line and length that made it very difficult to get them away. While we only lost four wickets we only made 20 runs off the bat. Combined with Onslow’s miserly wides total of 23 we were always going to be under the pump and finished on 49. Interestingly, this was exactly the same total we scored against them last time.

So plenty to work on and I’m sure we will be resurgent again. Congrats to Ben for being Player of the day and to Max for the Bowling Trophy.

See you on Wednesday at 5pm – 6pmish at Wgth College(if nice weather we may go a little longer).

Y5 Tigers – 5 Nov 2011

16 kids in white and some hardy parents shivering on the sideline so it could only mean the start of the new cricket season. Welcome to hard ball' and welcome to two new players who have joined us – Ryan & Logan. Unusual experience for the team on Saturday having a huge laying field all to themselves. And for a time there I thought they would be playing themselves as we waited for the Easts Snakes to turn up.

Eventually they slithered in and we got under way. As a portent of things to come, we won the toss and put Easts into bat. Some extremely good, tight bowling by the Tigers kept Easts scoring shots to a minimum, although we aided their total by conceding 30 extras, and eventually  hey mustered 69 for the loss of four wickets. Max and Louis both got their wickets clean bowled and Sam took a fantastic caught and bowled.   short pitched delivery that the batsman got a leading edge to which went close to 150 feet in the air. Sam had to wait 30 seconds for it to come down but he took it with ease.

In the second innings, our new look opening partnership of Ryan and Sam took to the bowlers with gusto and scored 12 and 17 respectively. Easts then introduced some bowlers to stop the run accumulation and it worked as our run rate dried up. Fortunately their 39 extras kept the total ticking along and at the end we were 90/4 – 52 runs off the bat.

First game of hard ball but the boys have picked up where they left off and carried on their winning ways.

What is great about this game is that everyone played a part in the win. The boys should all be proud of themselves.

Congratulations to Sam for Player of the Day!  Outstanding effort Sam!!

Also a special mention to Ben who did fantastic wicket keeping.
